Hi!  I'm Melissa Coates.  Thanks for visiting my blog about Microsoft Business Intelligence, Data Warehousing, Data Analysis, and Visualization.

I am a BI Architect with BlueGranite, a Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing consulting firm.  Consulting suits me well because it offers so many opportunities to see how different companies do things, to learn at a fast pace, and to be involved with interesting & challenging projects.

I'm a Microsoft SQL Server MVP.  The MVP award is granted annually to technical community leaders who actively share their expertise with others. I like to joke that my day job gets in the way of my blogging!  Speaking and blogging is a great way for me to learn things more thoroughly, and it's rewarding to share information which helps other people too.

Also, I'm one of the co-leaders and co-founders of the Charlotte BI Group. CBIG is a user group that focuses on Business Intelligence topics in a casual, fun and social way.  We hosted a very successful SQL Saturday in 2012, and our 2nd annual SQL Saturday event was held in October 2013

On a personal note, I firmly believe that being called a geek is a great compliment.  I shamelessly love disco music.  Turtlenecks are indeed hip & cool.  I'm just a little obsessed with baskets, organizers & office supplies.  And, I find technical books to be just delightful.  My motto:  Life is just more fun if you're easily amused.

I live in Charlotte, North Carolina with my husband who is a writer.  When I step away from the keyboard, you can probably find me hanging out with my border collie, playing in the garden, or with my nose in a book.

Keep smiling!  Keep learning!
